Jamaica Rum
They had been looking forward to their meeting again with uncontrollable excitement. Clarisse and Olga, the almost next-door neighbour’s from Kingston, Jamaica. It still came as something of a shock when at last, in Clarisse’s student digs, they came face to face after a two year break.
The effect Britain has on our foreign students is multifarious. There are those who absorb the new atmosphere and customs, and those who don’t still more who won’t, of course. Clarisse has been here for a couple of years, studying at a redbrick university and yet she still retains the look of the islands about her. Her hair is long (lush raven tresses), her clothes shriek out the spell of the South Seas. And yet Olga, fresh into Britain for her long saved-for vacation, why she looked more the globe-trotters, the worldly sophisticate although, in a sense, she was the one still with sand in her toes. Anyway it didn’t take long for the quiet literal bosom pals to get over their reactions to each other, drop all sophicastions and nervous excitement and revert to the kind of playful fun and games they used to imbibe in so merrily upon the beaches of home. The afternoon went in a flash – but there was a month’s vacation to follow. Everyday was a real Jamaican rum do!
