Mary Ann was studying her course on “How to be a physicist in four easy lessons without ever leaving your flat.” No wonder, in the course of trying to figure out how one gets a four foot pole inside a three foot hole she fell asleep, only to be awakened by her two close friends, Amy and Sal. They knew how to get a four foot pole into a three foot hole.
The lesson began simply enough. First, one plus one equals two. Right! Then, two plus one equals three. Not wrong, but not the whole answer either. Sal and Amy knew, from long experience, that if you add two and one, you get more than just three; you get a whole new experience that can’t be measured just by numbers.
Mary Ann was able to put away her text book, and do some figuring on her own. No more theories but a practical demonstration soon convinced her that, while a four foot pole might not be designed to fit into a three foot hole, there was no gainsaying the pleasure one could get by trying.
